Marlena does CampaniaGreat Food
We were fortunate to be invited to a cocktail reception in San Francisco featuring food and wine from the Province of Salerno. Award-winning writer and broadcaster Marlena Spieler was the group's American spokesperson.

We enjoyed fresh buffalo mozzarella, lush San Marzano tomatoes, Controne's extra virgin olive oil, Cetara's tangy, salty anchovy sauce, and the delicious wines of Castel San Lorenzo. Marlena's account of her culinary adventures in Italy made us want to run home and get our passports in order!

Jewish TraditionsIt also inspired us to pre-order her latest book, The Jewish Traditions Cookbook. It's a treasure of a book, including such Middle Eastern favorites as Falafel, Kofta Kebabs, Baba Ghanoush, Tabbouleh, and well, we'll tell you more when it arrives!

Our daughters adore her recent Yummy Potatoes, Grilled Cheese, and Macaroni And Cheese. They're perfect books for the young cook (and the young at heart!).

Just a few of Marlena's recipes that are perfect for summer entertaining are New Potato with Herbs & Coarse Salt with Greek Yogurt Dip, Tunisian Potato & Olive Salad, and Turkish Potato Salad. Try them and you'll be a fan, too!

World Food Corps SeedbankGreat Causes
We recently had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Susan Ji-Young Park. She and famous Algerian Chef Farid Zadi (who we'll be featuring next month) are on the board of Slow Food Pan-Arab, a division of Slow Food International. Susan is also the California Coordinator for World Food Corps Seed Bank, a program Chef Zadi also avidly supports. A program which gives you the opportunity to help countries suffering from dessertification grow fresh foods.

To find out how you can collect seeds from the foods you eat and where to send them, please visit Susan's WFCS blog. She has also created visual aids for teachers who are interested in implementing this wonderful community building and experiential learning project in their classrooms.

More Recipes
This month, among the dozens of new recipes you'll find, we're featuring those of Jamie Oliver, who has a fresh approach to Middle Eastern cooking. This weekend, we grilled his trio of kebabs (lamb, chicken and fish) and are now absolutely hooked. Check out his website for more fabulous recipes, podcasts, and lots of other fun food-related stuff.

And speaking of food, check out our new cooking video page. We plan to start posting our own videos there soon.

More Music
By popular demand, there are two new tracks from Amr Diab for you to sample this month. Hikayat and the title track from his latest hit cd, El Lilady. Visit our music archive for other great tracks.

Happy New Year
Jesse Ziff CoolWe had the great pleasure of spending New Year's Eve at the Flea Street Café, one of five wonderful restaurants founded by the gifted Jesse Ziff Cool. The atmosphere was casually elegant, the service was perfection, the jazz trio was excellent, Jesse couldn't have been lovelier, and our five course meals—both created with local, sustainable and organic ingredients—were absolutely unsurpassed.

Jesse's One-Pot CookbookIf you've made a New Year's resolution to eat right and eat well, please allow us to recommend Jesse's The Really, Truly, Honest-to-Goodness One-Pot Cookbook. We loved her Moroccan Chicken and Tunisian Lamb Stew recipes. And be sure to pre-order her upcoming, Simply Organic: A Cookbook for Sustainable, Seasonal, and Local Ingredients.
