The Arab Table
The Arab TableWith 188 recipes, May Bsisu's The Arab Table contains everything you need to know about the exquisite tastes and generous spirit of the Arab table. Chef Bsisu has lived and cooked in Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, England, and now the United States. Her cookbook focuses on the foods of Arab countries such as Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Syria. It includes special dishes she prepares at home for Ramadan and Eid, such as Fakdeh Mehshi Khodra (Stuffed Leg of Lamb). For dessert, there's Bohsalini (Semolina Pistachio Layer Cake) and Meramieh (Sage Tea). We hope your family will enjoy these recipes as much as we do.

No Child Should Go Hungry
Across America, families struggle to feed themselves, and children are hit the hardest. Share Our Strength®, a national nonprofit, is working to end childhood hunger in the U.S. by 2015. Williams-Sonoma and the Food Network have partnered with its No Kid Hungry® campaign to help get nutritious food to kids in need — and teach families how to cook healthy, affordable meals.

Williams-Sonoma will donate 20-25% of the purchase price of the Kai My First Knife — the perfect starter knife for your budding chef; the 5½ quart Limited Edition Le Creuset Signature Round Dutch Oven; and their own Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Mix to the No Kid Hungry® campaign.

The Sweets of Araby
Our favorite Middle Eastern cookbook this year is without a doubt The Sweets of Araby: Enchanting Recipes from the Tales of the 1001 Arabian Nights by sisters Leila Salloum Elias and Muna Salloum, and brilliantly illustrated by Linda Dalal Sawaya — author of Alice's Kitchen; Traditional Lebanese Cooking and celebrated artist. (View a high resolution image of the cover art here.)

Words can't describe the charm of this beautiful book. Fortunately, Tom Haushalter of The Countryman Press kindly sent us two excerpts to share: "the fourth night... Kunafah and the Browbeaten Husband" and "the seventh night... Ka'k and Shattered Dreams." Enjoy!

Man's Best Friend... and Woman's too!
Em and BoThe Saluki is thought to be the world's first domesticated dog. They are also uncommonly elegant, loyal, and never boring. Our daughter, Emily, found 11 month old Bowie at Gentle Giants Rescue in Norco, California. He's been her best friend ever since, and grows more handsome by the day.

If you're interested in adopting elsewhere in the United States, we highly recommend visiting the Saluki Tree of Life Alliance.

Salukis are intelligent animals, and learn very quickly using the Affection Training Method, which is designed specifically for sighthounds. This method is spelled out in Only Angels: How to Raise and Train the Perfect Sighthound by Cherie Fehrman.

For more information about this uniquely enchanting breed, visit the Saluki Club of America and the Society for the Perpetuation of Desert Bred Salukis.
